The scene is captioned in period German script: "Andenken a. Meerane" — meaning "Souvenir of Meerane."

Meerane was a prosperous textile manufacturing town in the Kingdom of Saxony, and the Bismarckplatz — named for Chancellor Otto von Bismarck — was its civic centerpiece. This type of Andenken (souvenir) porcelain was produced in great quantities in Thuringia and Saxony for the tourist and gift trade from the 1880s through the early 1900s, and pieces specific to smaller towns like Meerane are increasingly scarce.
