Vintage Russian Matryoshka Couple - Man with Mustache and Woman with Flowers, Bold Striped and Polka Dot Backs

Charming, bold, and full of folk character — this vintage Russian matryoshka couple is a wonderfully expressive pair of hand-painted nesting doll outer shells. The two figures complement each other perfectly and make a delightful display together.

The man is a dashing mustachioed fellow in a red vest with white shirt buttons, a black belt with a bold yellow buckle, and blue and cream striped trousers — all topped with a dark brown pointed hat. His expression is warm and jovial with a broad smile and a fine handlebar mustache. The reverse shows a bold graphic striped back in red, blue, and cream with a cream and gold band at the neck — very graphic and modern in feel.

His companion, the woman, is equally charming — rosy-cheeked and smiling in a pale blue polka dot headscarf with a white apron dress, holding a sweet bouquet of pink and green flowers. The reverse of her doll shows a pale blue polka dot and striped back with red dot hem band — a lovely complement to her partner's bold stripes.
